For a UX/UI concept project in 2020, I designed a user-friendly mobile app for BC Ferries patrons to easily plan their trips.
The problem I set out to solve was a lack of reservation and trip planning options for users on their mobile phones. The existing method for planning a trip with BC Ferries required visiting their website, whose user experience prioritizes ads for vacation packages on their landing page, burying information for each route and sailing within its subpages.
After conducting qualitative user research interviews, I concluded that many travellers are using BC Ferries as a transportation service to get from A to B and would benefit from an intuitive, Google-style trip planner. Personas were created for two types of customers; one who uses the service for exploring all the corners of beautiful BC, and one who uses it when they intend to visit family on the mainland.

Personas were created for two types of customers; one who uses the service for exploring all the corners of beautiful BC, and one who uses it when they intend to visit family on the mainland.
After determining the information architecture for the app, two user flows were identified. The first user flow focuses on showing a user today’s sailings in the shortest number of steps possible, based on GPS location, so that anyone who is making last minute travel plans can make decisions quickly. The second user flow includes a visual, map-based trip planner for travellers to compare multiple options for their journey at a glance; ideal for those who are taking longer, multi-ferry journeys.
In addition to the UX concept, I created some conceptual branding for BC Ferries and designed a minimalist user interface for the app.
