Organized by MistyWest, the annual HardTech Awards recognize leaders advancing intelligent and connected devices at scale. Winners range from senior engineers at companies like Microsoft, Amazon, and SpaceX to founders building emerging technologies that are actively shaping the future of hardware commercialization.
Originally launched as “The Misties,” the awards were rebranded in 2025 as the HardTech Awards to better reflect their evolving scale, ambition, and industry positioning. The new identity also aligned the awards with MistyWest’s broader ecosystem of community initiatives, including HardTech Forum.
The awards were designed not only for recognition, but as a relationship-driven marketing program that includes nominations, interviews, and in-person events. These create meaningful touchpoints for MistyWest with fast-growing hardware startups and offer the business development team warm entry points to build long-term relationships.
As Brand Lead, I shaped the new HardTech Awards identity across digital, experiential, and editorial touchpoints to create a more cohesive and elevated brand experience.
A key objective was distinguishing the awards from ‘founder-celebrity’ culture—we’re looking for the engineers, designers, and technical visionaries who are quietly shaping the future of commercialized hardware innovation. Enter the tagline: “Elon Musk need not apply.”
I led the design of a fully responsive awards website across different devices that was structured around the current year’s winners, archival award recipients, sponsors, judges, and interview content featuring past honourees. The visual direction was minimalist so as not to distract from the technical credibility of its content.
The nomination process itself was also simplified, after drawing from insights gathered during previous years. The user experience focused on the three core evaluation criteria, creating a more accessible and streamlined submission flow.
Beyond the website, I provided art direction for campaign assets across email marketing, media kits, presentation design, digital award certificates, and social assets used throughout the nomination and announcement cycle.
For the in-person HardTech Awards ceremony, I curated local art installations, coordinated startup technology demos, and helped shape the overall event experience to reflect a polished but relaxed gathering of some of the most brilliant minds working in tech.
Since its inception, the HardTech Awards have recognized more than 100 individuals and are rapidly emerging as one of the largest recognition platforms dedicated to commercialized hardware innovation.
